THIS WEEK IN HIGH-YIELD TOURISM #20

Digital nomads are emerging as a dynamic and influential force in global tourism. This week, we examine how travel marketers can better understand the needs of location-independent professionals that blend work and travel – and balance the challenges and opportunities for local communities.

1) As remote work reshapes global mobility and “borderless travel”, more countries are launching digital nomad visa schemes. But are these programs effective, too complex, or simply a PR stunt?

In Episode 14 of the High-Yield Tourism podcast, Gary Bowerman & Miloš Pelucha (Co-founder of Destinova) discuss innovative nomad models that are creating travel-and-lifestyle shifts from China to Bulgaria, Vietnam to Morocco and Armenia to Azores.

2) How Nomad-ready is your destination? Digital nomads aren’t just passing through places. They are building lives, tourism businesses and integrating with local communities in the places they choose to work.

In this new article, Gerrit Kruger explores how destinations like Madeira, Bali, Estonia and Georgia are going beyond fast Wi-Fi and scenic views. Instead, “they’re investing in ecosystems, co-working spaces, community building, cultural integration, and long-stay infrastructure.”

3) “The Digital Nomad movement is here to stay – and it’s becoming more organised, dynamic and fluid. The pandemic taught us that countries have to be more resilient in their planning for the future of travel and tourism, and models that have worked in the past will change and evolve. Global mobility and remote working will definitely be a part of the future of tourism.”

South East Asia is a desirable region for digital nomads and remote workers. Bali, Chiang Mai and Danang are destinations where international and domestic digital nomads are co-mingling, and learning from each other.

Gary Bowerman joined host Richard Bradbury on Malaysia’s BFM 89.9 – The Business Station to discuss how destination marketers in Malaysia and South East Asia can rethink digital nomadism, remote work and borderless living as a High-Yield Tourism segment – and manage the various associated challenges.
